Acqua di San Giovanni, one of the many traditions to experience in the slow-paced Mugello region

Today, San Giovanni, the patron saint, is celebrated in various places in Mugello, above all in Vicchio and Firenzuola, but also in many hamlets, as in other parts of Italy, a tradition is renewed. Yesterday, many people set out into the beautiful Mugello countryside, despite the heat and drought of recent days, to gather the flowers and herbs needed to produce the traditional Acqua di San Giovanni. An ancient, fragrant tradition, which seems to bring prosperity, health and beauty to those who go out in the evening to gather the many flowers found in the area (everyone has their own recipe, but some are essential). They put them in a bath and leave them exposed to the dew of St. John's night. In the morning, they use it to wash their face and hands, while thinking positive thoughts. It is also a kind gift to give to neighbours, relatives and friends, a sign of thoughtfulness and attention. It is one of many traditions, such as CantaMaggio, the fires of Santa Maria, the wheat lanterns, and many more, linked to the agricultural world, always with the idea of bringing good harvests, health and keeping evil away from one's life and fields, which groups of volunteers and individual citizens keep alive at certain times of the year. These traditions are wonderful to experience and discover and can enrich your walk or bike ride along the Orme del Mugello trails. Combined with the beauty of the landscape, history, culture and hospitality, they offer a way to get to know Mugello and its roots more deeply, linked to the seasons, which makes every moment beautiful for travelling at a slow pace in Mugello. Perhaps picking flowers along the way to make San Giovanni water. And in the evening, ending up at one of the village festivals celebrating the patron saint. Happy San Giovanni and happy Mugello to everyone!
