San Francesco
FotoThe Church of San Francesco in Borgo San Lorenzo, one of the main religious buildings in the municipality, is an important example of Tuscan medieval architecture. Its construction began at the end of the 13th century, precisely in 1286, by the will of the Franciscan Friars, who settled in the village following the vocation of their founder, Saint Francis of Assisi. The church was built during a period of great expansion for the Franciscan Order, which, thanks to its preaching of poverty and humility, managed to gain a large following throughout Tuscany. The building is characterized by a simple facade, devoid of decorations and symbolic of Franciscan spirituality, which rejected any ostentation and wealth. The original structure, dating back to the foundation period, has remained substantially unchanged, with a single nave plan, simple yet harmonious, typical of Franciscan churches. Inside, the church houses numerous frescoes dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, some of which are attributed to masters of the Florentine school, such as Giotto's workshop and other local artists. The frescoes depict episodes from the life of Saint Francis and biblical scenes, intended to educate the rural population of Mugello, who attended the church. Particularly significant are the frescoes decorating the main chapel, depicting the main events of the saint's life, symbolizing simplicity and humility. Over the centuries, the Church of San Francesco has undergone various modifications and restorations, but has always maintained its function as a place of worship and gathering for the community. During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, some furnishings and decorations were added, but the original appearance of the church remained intact, preserving a charm that continues to attract the interest of historians, scholars, and visitors. Today, the Church of San Francesco is not only an important historical and artistic testimony but also a spiritual reference point for the territory, despite being private and belonging to the Negrotto Cambiaso family. Its centuries-old history tells of the deep roots of the Borgo San Lorenzo community, which has managed to preserve this place of faith and culture over the centuries.
