The Church of San Michele in Lumena is a place rich in history, art, and spirituality. Its isolated location, among woods and hills, has contributed to keeping the charm of this ancient church intact, which for centuries has been a point of reference for the local community and for travelers passing through the area. The name "Lumena" may derive from the Latin word lumen, referring to the light that illuminates the valley, or from ancient denominations linked to the territory. Dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, the warrior saint protector against the forces of evil, the church reflects the strong medieval devotion to this saint, highly venerated along transit routes and in border areas. The origins of the church date back to the medieval period, probably to the 12th century, when it was built as a rural parish church to serve the small settlements in the area. In the following centuries, it underwent expansions and restorations that modified its structure, while still maintaining its Romanesque character. Inside the church, there are some late medieval frescoes, which once adorned the walls with images of saints and biblical scenes, and polychrome wooden sculptures, typical of the Tuscan artistic tradition between the 13th and 14th centuries. Despite the transformations over the centuries, the church still preserves original Romanesque elements, such as the semicircular apse and some carved decorations on the capitals. The Church of San Michele in Lumena has been frequented over the centuries by illustrious figures, including scholars and religious figures linked to the region's history. According to some testimonies, Benedictine and Franciscan monks stayed here for periods of prayer and meditation. Among the most evocative anecdotes related to the church, it is said that some medieval knights, returning from crusades or pilgrimages, stopped here to thank Saint Michael the Archangel for the protection received. Furthermore, on the clearest nights, the church's position offers a spectacular view of the stars, enhancing its reputation as a mystical and spiritual place.
