In the heart of Mugello, a fertile land of great artists, lies the Birthplace of Beato Angelico, located in the hamlet of Moriano, in the municipality of Vicchio. This place, immersed in the evocative Tuscan countryside, is the birth site of Guido di Pietro, renowned as Beato Angelico, one of the greatest painters of the early Renaissance. The house is situated in a hilly area and is part of the circuit of locations linked to artists from Mugello. A commemorative plaque on the facade reminds visitors that Fra' Giovanni da Fiesole, the future Beato Angelico, was born and spent his youth right here. The dwelling where Beato Angelico was born dates back to the 14th century and is a stone building, typical of Tuscan farmhouses. Here, young Guido di Pietro spent his early years before moving to Florence, where he joined the Dominican convent of San Domenico in Fiesole and began his artistic and spiritual journey. Born around 1395-1400, Guido di Pietro became a Dominican friar with the name Fra' Giovanni da Fiesole, but was called Beato Angelico for the profound spirituality of his works. A refined and innovative artist, he managed to blend realism with mysticism, creating masterpieces that still enchant the world today. Among his most famous works are: the frescoes at the Convent of San Marco in Florence, including the iconic "Annunciation", the Niccoline Chapel in the Vatican, a prime example of Renaissance painting, the Last Judgment, with its extraordinary attention to detail and light. His art is a perfect balance of faith, beauty, and innovation, influencing entire generations of painters. Despite being a simple and intimate place, the Birthplace of Beato Angelico is a fundamental symbol for the history of art and Tuscan culture. It represents the starting point of a journey that led a young farmer from Mugello to become one of the greatest painters of the 15th century. The region keeps his memory alive through the Beato Angelico Museum in Vicchio, which gathers reproductions of his works and educational materials about his life and painting style. Visiting Moriano di Vicchio allows you to rediscover the origins of an artist who, with his talent and devotion, managed to elevate painting to a mystical and universal experience.
