Ponte di Cimabue
FotoThe Cimabue Bridge, located near the hamlet of Vespignano in Vicchio, is a symbolic place that combines art, history, and legend. This bridge is linked to the figure of Giotto and his encounter with the master Cimabue, an episode that marked the beginning of the great painter's career. Today, despite having undergone modifications and restorations over time, it retains its historical and cultural value. The current structure is not the original medieval one, but the place has remained a point of reference for art history enthusiasts. Near the bridge, there is a sculpture titled "Cimabue discovers the artist," a work by Fabrizio Maiorelli. The artwork recalls the famous episode narrated by Vasari: it is said that Cimabue, passing through these areas, noticed a young shepherd boy drawing a sheep on a stone with a piece of charcoal. Struck by the extraordinary skill of the boy, the master took him to Florence, thus initiating the artistic career of Giotto di Bondone. The encounter between Cimabue and Giotto, although shrouded in legend, is one of the most fascinating stories in art history, symbolizing the transition from medieval art to Renaissance innovation. Located along the paths leading to Giotto's Birthplace in Vespignano, it allows visitors to immerse themselves in the context that saw the birth of one of the greatest artists of all time. The Mugello, with its landscape and history, continues to be an endless source of inspiration, just as it was for Giotto over seven centuries ago.
