Fonte alla Capra
FotoIn the heart of Monte Giovi, at about 900 meters above sea level, lies Fonte alla Capra, a place of great historical and symbolic importance linked to the Resistance during the Second World War. Located just below the ridge overlooking the Mugello and the Val di Sieve, this spring represented a strategic point for the partisan groups who found shelter, supplies, and a stronghold for their fight against the Nazi-Fascist occupation. Between 1943-1944, Monte Giovi became a battleground between the partisan groups and the German forces. In particular, the area around Fonte alla Capra hosted the Spartaco Lavagnini Brigade, one of the most active resistance groups in Tuscany. The partisans sought refuge in the woods and used this spring as a crucial supply point, both for water and for organizing their guerrilla actions. It is said that, on more than one occasion, the fighters hid near the spring, taking advantage of the dense vegetation and isolated location to evade German searches. Despite the harsh living conditions, cold, and hunger, the will of these men and women remained unbroken, finding in resistance a source of hope and redemption. Today, Fonte alla Capra is a place of remembrance, visited by hikers and history enthusiasts. Every year, in April, walks and commemorations are held to honor the sacrifice of those who fought here for freedom. Monte Giovi, with its wild beauty and history of resistance, preserves the memory of a past that should not be forgotten. Visiting Fonte alla Capra means reliving those challenging days, paying tribute to the partisans, and reflecting on the importance of freedom, earned through sacrifice and courage.
