Gattaia Partigiani
FotoIn the hamlet of Gattaia, in the municipality of Vicchio, a stone plaque preserves the memory of two young partisans: Ottorino Quiti and Adriano Santoni, heroes of the Resistance, who were shot on March 22, 1944, at the Campo di Marte in Florence by the Nazi-fascists. This plaque, placed in a strategic point of the village, recalls the fundamental role of Gattaia in the partisan struggle, when the town became an operational base of the Resistance. From here, on March 6, 1944, a crucial action took place: the partisans of Gattaia, joining forces with those of Monte Giovi and with the support of the population, descended into battle to liberate Vicchio di Mugello from the Nazi-fascist occupation. The inscription is a warning against barbarism and violence, an invitation not to forget the sacrifice of those who fought for freedom. Every year, on the occasion of the Resistance commemorations, the local community and anti-fascist associations gather in front of the plaque to honor the memory of Quiti and Santoni, symbols of courage and commitment to justice. The message engraved in the stone is a tangible testimony of those dark years and a beacon for future generations, so that the memory does not fade and the freedom achieved through sacrifice is always defended.
