Located in the heart of Vicchio di Mugello, in the central Piazza Giotto, the Church of San Giovanni Battista is a place of worship of great historical and artistic significance, deeply connected to the events of the local community and to the figure of the saint to whom it is dedicated. The origins of the church date back to the Middle Ages, although the building has undergone numerous interventions and restorations over the centuries. The name clearly refers to San Giovanni Battista, the patron saint of the city of Florence and a central figure in Christian tradition. His devotion spread in Mugello already in the Lombard period, and this church became an important symbol of it. Over time, the church has been expanded and enriched, becoming a point of reference for the religious and social life of Vicchio. Inside the church, there are numerous works of art, including paintings and sculptures that testify to the close connection between Vicchio and the great Florentine artistic tradition. Being the birthplace of Giotto and Beato Angelico, Vicchio has always had a strong bond with sacred art. Although the most famous works of these artists are now found elsewhere, the church houses some valuable canvases from the Florentine school, as well as liturgical furnishings of worth.
