The "Fiera dei Poggi" is a historic site located near the famous Passo del Muraglione, along the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines. It is situated in the municipality of San Godenzo, on the border between the provinces of Florence and Forlì-Cesena, in a strategic position along the ancient road that connects Romagna and Mugello. This plateau, surrounded by beech and oak forests, has been a natural crossroads for travelers, merchants, and shepherds for centuries. Its importance stems from its location along the transhumance and trade routes, making it a meeting point and exchange hub for local communities. The name "Fiera dei Poggi" originates from the ancient fair held in this place, an annual event dedicated to the exchange of livestock, agricultural, and artisanal products. The word "Fiera" refers to the commercial function of the place, while "Poggi" refers to the hilly conformation on which it stands, with gentle slopes extending towards the Passo del Muraglione. Every year, the reenactment of the ancient livestock fair takes place at the "Fiera dei Poggi" location. This historical event recalls the tradition of the "Fair on the Hills," which was a fundamental meeting point for transhumant shepherds and breeders who populated these mountains during the summer. Here, livestock, horses, and agricultural products were exchanged, along with life experiences and conversations. The fair was not just a place of trade but also a moment of socialization that strengthened the bonds between mountain communities. "Fiera dei Poggi" has been a source of inspiration for art. A striking painting, created by the local artist Giulio Pieraccini, captures the atmosphere of the place and the pastoral life that once animated it. The vast expanses of the plateau and the pristine natural setting provided an ideal inspiration to represent the simplicity and beauty of rural life. In addition to the fair, the place is linked to another significant naturalistic and cultural symbol: the Acquacheta. A short distance from the "Fiera dei Poggi," you can reach the famous waterfall mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy. This reference makes the area even more interesting for those who want to immerse themselves in an itinerary that intertwines nature, history, and literature. Another curiosity concerns the tradition of the "Blessing of the Livestock" that took place during the fair. Shepherds would bring their flocks to a nearby small chapel to receive blessings, invoking prosperity and protection for their animals.
